It's always interesting to me how different a television ad can end up being from the original storyboard. In this case my storyboard was part of the original pitch to client. I then didn't hear anything about it till it aired recently, and I can only imagine how many revisions and rewrites it went through to get to here. I was very impressed with how the running on all fours was handled. Done even slightly differently it could have looked ridiculous.

I'll do this sometimes, I'll try(emphasis on try) work in an artist I admires style. I find it helps me figure out new ways of thinking and approaching drawing. I do it just for me, I'm not planning on cashing in on other peoples styles(especially ones as truly original as this), it's just a bit of fun.

This is my attempt at drawing the monkey king in a 'gallowayesque' style, I don't think I get near the awesome awesomeness that is cheek's work, but that really wasn't the point of this excercise. Do yourselves a favour and check out his blog, and buy his sketchbooks they're amazing.

This is part of a poster I finished a while back. There are three more to do for the campaign. I'd love to show it in full but as the agency hasn't been able to give me the go ahead yet I'm just going to play it safe.

The process of creating this look was basically drawing the entire thing in pencil on A1 paper and then working into it in photoshop once it was scanned. Then some texture was dropped onto it and VOILA, circle-circle-spiderman kiddies

I'm not sure how far and wide this campaign is spread at the moment, but if you live in the Johannesburg area, you might have seen a few of these Mr Men billboards I did, for Virgin Atlantic, around. The creative team's(Network BBDO) concept is that the flights are so good that they effect the demeanor of particular Mr Men and change their personalities for the better. Mr Lazy feels rested and so works, Mr Grumble is happy, Mr Messy becomes tidy, Mr Grumpy smiles and so on.

Roger Hargreaves worked in advertising and actually drew all the original books with Magic Markers, so it was a lot of fun to try and recreate that look by hand. I worked quite small on regular A4 photocopier paper and then scanned really high res. I think the texture the scan picked up adds to the authenticity of the pieces. These were a lot of fun to do and only slightly harder to draw than they look ;)

My buddy Sean Izaakse and I are going to do a series of drawings of characters we just plain dig. I'll draw the one half of the battle and he'll draw the other. Then we'll ink each others pencils(yup it is as dirty as it sounds).

Here's the pencils for the first pic. I drew Shang Chi(top), while Sean drew the very dynamic Iron Fist(bottom).

This page is what happens when you ignore the little voice in the back of your head telling you something's not quite right with the picture. Thankfully, writer extrordinaire, Brandon Thomas called me on it and I now have a page that doesn't make me want to give it all up and be a stunt man when I look at it. In the end I redrew this whole page, stealing a few bit of wreckage.

Below you'll see an animated short(or shart as MTV 2 calls them) that I worked on with The Ebeling Group. I was responsible for background designs, storyboarding and key frames. Below that are some examples of the original files I created. It's always interesting to see how a third party interprets or changes what you did. Looks pretty damn cool.

I'm enjoying how this turned out. The middle panel was the most fun as it was the only part I really got to try something new.

I think the drawing itself turned out pretty cool, and the colour is alright.It holds together quite well.

I like taking part in these little jams because it gives me the chance to experiment, as I'm really just doing these for me, just to see what I can do.

If deadlines hadn't interfered I would probably have pushed it more, as it is I did the colouring while working an all nighter for another deadline. Yeah I know weep weep cry me a river.

The SA comic jam is always quite a strange experience. Someone writes a script, some other guys design characters and then we all get assigned one page. What makes it odd is that besides the script and character designs you really have no other idea what everyone else is doing. So you have to design a page that gives you all the information you need about what's going on in the story, all at a glance. I have know idea how the guy before me ended his page, how he choreographed his people and backgrounds, and of course I don't know what the next guy is gong to do either. So while each individual page can be very fun to look at the final 10 page story doesn't read very well. It doesn't make it any less fun to look at or do.

I did a little job for Virgin Atlantic recently. They had a stall at the Whisky Expo and I did the illustrations for it. I think Virgin Atlantic is one of the few airlines that has a proper sit down bar in their Upper Class section, and they were trying to punt that fact by getting everyone plastered... Nope didn't get to go.
